A scholar of Greek literature, Joshua says his lodestar was always Cavafy’s sense of art as ‘completing life’; later, looking south from Sparta, he realised he needed to flip the axiom. ‘Greece wasn’t an idea that I wanted to study,’ he found, ‘but a place I wanted to live.’ He now leads tours through the country (joshuabarley.com) both in person and – in the case of the ‘Narnia-like’ murals of Zagori featured in the October 2023 issue – in ink.
